Trump trial updates, Charlotte shooting & more: What's trending today

code enforcement charlotte nc

Cities and law enforcement agencies turn to code enforcement to handle these types of issues. Normally, prostitution is considered a crime; however, it is hard to prove and hard to enforce in many of these establishments. Therefore, code enforcement uses licensing, zoning, building regulations and professional standard ordinances to address or even shut down these illicit establishments. Here’s a look at some of the top stories trending online today, April 30.

Fugitive task forces are collaborations between agencies to find and arrest suspects in crimes. President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting and spoke with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to express his condolences and support for the community. A second person then fired on officers from inside the home where a high-powered rifle was found, Jennings added. After a three-hour standoff, the suburban Charlotte home was torn open. Armored vehicles smashed into it, ripping off windows and entire doorways that were left broken. Several armored vehicles were parked across yards, some with tree branches dangling off them.

Earlier today, four brave law enforcement officers - including a Deputy U.S. Marshal - were killed in the line of duty. They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded. (WBTV/Gray News) — Four law enforcement officers were killed, and four others were wounded while trying to serve an arrest warrant in a neighborhood in Charlotte.

These code officials can answer your code questions and offer guidance as you try to plan your project from conception to submittal. After your project is submitted for plan review or in the field for inspections, this team can still assist, however, the interpretations of your Plans Examiner or Field Inspector will take precedent. Furthermore, code enforcement always has to come up with new solutions to address new concerns, and we have to coordinate with different departments in a jurisdiction. Examples include, but are not limited to, public works, licensing, fire departments, building, finance, mayoral executive offices, city attorney, engineering, police or planning. There is no unique standard where code enforcement belongs, because we work with all. But gun violence is putting pressure on their relationship with Republican lawmakers, who are often proponents of looser gun laws.

You can add on to your house if there is enough room in your yard and the addition meets the current NC building codes. Contact the appropriate zoning jurisdiction for your area regarding set-backs and space requirements for the addition. If there are different contractors installing low voltage wiring, each contractor will need to submit separate permit applications. If this wiring is part of a larger overall project under construction, the Electrical permit application will need to have the six (6) digit county project number of the larger project.

A storage shed, or an accessory building will need a building permit if any dimension is greater than 12 feet in any one dimension. If the building is less than 12 feet, it will not need a building permit, but it will need a zoning permit. Follow this link to the Helpful Links web page and click on Permit Fee Estimator to calculate an estimated building permit fee.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908. For much of U.S. history, most states lacked laws around carrying concealed weapons. In the past 50 years, many have relaxed concealed handgun restrictions. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Monday night an officer who had been injured in the shooting had died.

Much of that shift is driven by what gun rights activists call a “good guy with a gun” scenario that, in effect, enlists parts of the population to help keep the peace. In 2023, North Carolina Republicans suddenly pulled a constitutional-carry bill, with part of the resistance coming from the state sheriffs association. As Charlotte residents watched a procession for one of the fallen officers Tuesday, there was a sense that more could be done to protect the protectors.

This function may also be accomplished through the contractor account. The new permit application must reference the previous permit number that was cancelled and the approved project number. Code Enforcement is proud to work with municipal and state authorities on all local construction projects. In most cases, customers will need to work with municipal, state, or other county agencies to clear holds and receive a permit of certificate of occupancy for their projects. Please visit our partner agencies and familiarize yourself with the role they may have in your project. Our agency is guided by an advisory board, the Building Development Commission.

A shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday highlights why some police departments across the United States have called on lawmakers in recent years to stop relaxing gun laws. The incident, which left four officers dead and several others wounded, happened as police attempted to arrest a man for possession of a firearm by a felon. The danger code enforcement officers face is illustrated in this sad video in West Valley City, UT. Sadly, a code enforcement officer was shot and killed for simply doing their job.

The Giffords Law Center’s Annual Gun Law Scorecard finds that gun violence in general and against police in particular is higher in states with relaxed gun laws. Looser gun laws can infuse tensions into scenarios like that in Charlotte, where police are trying to separate unlawful carriers from their guns. Due to Florida legislative changes in 2021, a code inspector may not initiate an investigation of a potential code violation based on an anonymous complaint.

The CIRC lobby staff will determine if the additional review will take place through OnSchedule Review or Small Commercial Review. Yes, the experience of seeing children being carried out from a garage where there is a fatality due to a garage conversion catching fire is one example. I’ve had to call child protective services to deal with neglected children, because the parents were too high on drugs to care for them. During the course of our duties, we also witness crimes that happen to our general public.

The drawings should include an Appendix B, a site plan drawing showing the location of the wall(s), the Statement of Special Inspections, elevations, details sheet and a structural load sheet. If this wall is part of a larger overall project under constructions, the Building Permit application will need to have the six (6) digit county project number of the larger project. No, you must list your General Contractor and P, M, & E sub-contractors on your Building permit application when you submit for Small Commercial review. Official County websites use MeckNC.govMeckNC.gov websites belong to official departments or programs of the Mecklenburg County government. After that day I never tried out for cheer again, until I got to college. My sophomore year I decided to try out for the Luv-A-Bulls cheer team, who had just won the National Championship the previous year. I worked very hard to learn the material and was determine to give it my all come audition day. Shortly after auditioning both teams, JV and Varsity were selected.

I decided to slow down and look carefully b/c I must have passed my name, but my name wasn’t on the Cheerleader roster.

I was raised in a small town called Stanley, NC. I was 8 years old and b/c of my athletic capabilities at a young age, I assumed there was no sport I couldn’t do. My mom signed me up for cheer and I went to every practice eager to learn the material, as I was determined to make the team. I practiced so much around the house; my parents would yell, “sit down”. I went in the gym with 4 other girls and put on a show, so I thought. I left out the audition feeling really good and excited about becoming a cheerleader.

Members' Congressional Handbook United States Committee on House Administration

house of representatives requirements

Members may not accept free office space from private entities. Private office space must be leased at a fair market value as the result of a bona fide, arms-length, marketplace transaction. The Committee on Ethics has ruled that Members may accept free office space, located in their district, when such space is provided by a federal, state, or local government agency.

Getting on the Ballot

Generally, the debate procedures of the Committee of the Whole are more flexible than those of the House itself. One advantage of the Committee of the Whole is its ability to include otherwise non-voting members of Congress. Representatives and delegates serve for two-year terms, while a resident commissioner (a kind of delegate) serves for four years. A term starts on January 3 following the election in November. The U.S. Constitution requires that vacancies in the House be filled with a special election.

Staff

However, the Constitution states, "All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives." Because of the Origination Clause, the Senate cannot initiate bills imposing taxes. This provision barring the Senate from introducing revenue bills is based on the practice of the British Parliament, in which only the House of Commons may originate such measures. Furthermore, congressional tradition holds that the House of Representatives originates appropriation bills. After the whips, the next ranking official in the House party's leadership is the party conference chair (styled as the Republican conference chair and Democratic caucus chair). The House also has the power to formally censure or reprimand its members; censure or reprimand of a member requires only a simple majority, and does not remove that member from office. The table provides a list of current U.S. representatives.

Traveler then seeks reimbursement for the government rate of the direct route (official to official) or the actual traveled fare (personal to official), whichever is less. Advanced payments for tolls or transponder expenses are not reimbursable; however, monthly transponder statements with official travel tolls clearly identified may be submitted for reimbursement. Transponder service or rental fees are not reimbursable unless use is entirely official. In order to ensure the safety of Members, the MRA may be used to reimburse the cost of a Member’s individual, annual CLEAR Plus membership. That motivated the founders to include the requirement that Members of the House live in the state they represent in order to increase the likelihood that they would be familiar with the people’s interests and needs. The Congressional district system and the process of apportionment were developed later as the states dealt with how to fairly organize their congressional representation. The webmaster will not forward messages to congressional offices. Political polling is a crucial tool for understanding public opinion. Political polling can also help identify demographic groups more or less likely to support an aspirant. The Secretary of State may be an excellent resource for anyone considering running for office, outlining the necessary processes and papers to file. For adequate time to collect the requisite signatures and submit the relevant papers, it is imperative to begin getting on the ballot as soon as possible. In most states, you must pay a filing fee to get on the ballot.

Go to the Clerk’s site for more information about representatives. Test your knowledge of the average age of members of Congress over time. No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.

If Congress is in session and the President takes no action within 10 days, the bill becomes law. If Congress adjourns before 10 days are up and the President takes no action, then the bill dies and Congress may not vote to override. This is called a pocket veto, and if Congress still wants to pass the legislation, they must begin the entire process anew. In order to pass legislation and send it to the President for his or her signature, both the House and the Senate must pass the same bill by majority vote.

Members are not authorized to procure consultant services or to enter into detailee agreements. The Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) also contains definitions of “employees” and “interns.” Nothing in this Handbook alters those statutory definitions as applied under the CAA. 11.Members may not use official resources to misrepresent their current officialpositions or titles within the House. A Member may not accept from any private source in-kind support having monetary value for an official activity. The Communications Standards Commission (“Commission”) regulates all official communications. Questions about communications should be directed to the Communications Standards Commission.

Additionally, some territories may choose to also elect shadow representatives, though these are not official members of the House and are separate individuals from their official delegates. The late 19th and early 20th centuries also saw a dramatic increase in the power of the speaker of the House. The rise of the speaker's influence began in the 1890s, during the tenure of Republican Thomas Brackett Reed. While the minority leader was the head of the minority party, the majority leader remained subordinate to the speaker. The speakership reached its zenith during the term of Republican Joseph Gurney Cannon, from 1903 to 1911. The speaker's powers included chairmanship of the influential Rules Committee and the ability to appoint members of other House committees.

The Constitution's silence as to authority to impose additional qualifications meant that this power resides in the states. There is no central listing of member office public e-mail addresses. Each member of Congress establishes their office's policy related to the processing and management of e-mail. Generally, if a member has a public e-mail address, it can be found on the member's website. The office may list a public e-mail address or provide a form directly on the member's website. The U.S. House of Representatives does not provide a listing of public e-mail addresses for the elected Representatives.

However, the Member may not then give that individual further promotions or raises, other than cost-of-living or other across-theboard adjustments. The Legislative Process

It also struck down the poll tax in Harper v. Virginia Board of Elections (1966), based on the principle that the right to vote should not depend on one’s wealth or poverty. Other barriers to equal participation and representation were invalidated under the Voting Rights Act. We now take it for granted that race, sex, and economic means are not proper bases for denying or diminishing the vote. While the Court’s decision in Evenwel can be readily justified by history and tradition, it does suggest that the Court’s longstanding rhetoric of equal voting power may be misguided. An individual’s vote in Texas’s 1st District clearly is worth less than a vote in a 27th District, in that it has less impact on the outcome of a race.

Thailand Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Cruises to Thailand

For more information please see Our cruise holidays are ATOL protected (No. 6294). Divers all over the world know about this beautiful boulder-clad archipelago. Hiking trails let you explore the lush rainforest interior, while crystal clear waters with turtles, manta rays and colourful coral make the Similan Islands one of the best snorkelling areas of the south. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Thailand is a majorly warm and hot country, even during the winter months, so bring clothes that are lightweight and breathable. Be sure to include comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, hats to protect your head and face from the sun and swimsuits for any beach trips you're planning after you dock.

All Inclusive Cruises vs. Traditional All Inclusive Vacations

Any time between November to April would be appropriate for a cruise trip in Thailand. In most of the cases, the cruises depart from Laem Chabang that is located in Bangkok. In the case of a smaller sail, they depart from Phuket, Koh Samui, Phi Phi, and many more. During the dining, traditional Thai Kim music is played, and traditional Thai dishes are served to form each distinct region. If you are on vacation with your partner and want a romantic candlelit experience, then the Loy Nava Dinner Cruise can be a great choice for you.

Limestone cliffs jut out from brilliant aquamarine waters brimming with underwater treasures. The Andaman Sea is warm, clear and filled with coral reef, making it a fantastic place for snorkelling and scuba diving. Plan well ahead for your cruise adventure to ensure availability for your desired cruise and choose your trip at the right time of year. The same applies to arranging your flights and transfers; it is best to do that well in advance to avoid non-availability. Thailand cruise packing tips include sunscreen, sunglasses, bathing suits, insect repellents, hats, light but long sleeve shirts as the Thai sun can be fierce, and a hoodie for chilly evenings. If you have your snorkeling gear, we recommend bringing it on your cruise as it fits you properly.

Most of the ship also turns out for deck parties, and partnerships with Discovery and Animal Planet bring families together on special shore excursions and activities like stargazing at sea. Princess is fairly traditional with their dress code. Depending on the length of the cruise, there are a varying number of formal nights, where women wear evening gowns and cocktail dresses and men wear tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits with a tie to dinner.

Crown Princess Review

There is still a lot included in the price and many cruisers don’t spend much more than that, if at all. It’s up to you whether you want to buy alcoholic beverages or take excursions. But the shows, games, main dining room, pool, etc are available to you.

The Caribbean Princess Deck Plan Includes Many Cabin-Only Decks

Plenty of people do it on the cheap, don't drink and stick to the included offers you won't feel out of place and not fitting in. I know it is a bitter pill, but you might be better off just losing the 600 pounds and booking a much cheaper one-week cruise. Our costs before we even step on ship are £5k approx without the Plus package or any up selling which will occur either closer to the time or on board. The customer experience is something I feel really strongly about as I've worked in customer experience my entire life and this felt like an absolute kick in the teeth and sod the customer.

Where does Royal Princess sail from?

Those familiar with Princess cruise line won’t be surprised to learn that Caribbean Princess’ deck plans are well designed and easy to navigate. With a smart layout that offers good separation between busy public spaces and cabins, nights are generally quiet in most staterooms. Even on the few decks where there’s a mix of both – i.e., decks 5, 6 and 15 – most cabins are far enough from the public areas that get most foot traffic and noise. The only exception would be Deck 6 (Fiesta), whose suites are surrounded by the theater, the shops, and Crown Grill. Those, along with cabins on Deck 14 midship and aft, may very well be the only Caribbean Princess cabins to avoid if getting a good night’s sleep is a priority for you.

Passengers on Caribbean Princess also eat up destination talks and enjoy participating in arts and crafts, and musical instrument lessons inspired by the locales the ship visits. Consider sharing your journey with your fellow Cruise Critic members as-it-happens by posting a live thread detailing your cruise. In addition to asking questions, you can also use Cruise Critic’s unique Roll Call feature to connect with folks onboard the same sailing as you – all before you’ve ever set foot aboard your ship. @CruiseLibre As others have mentioned, you should cancel your cruise and move on. Above all, traveling is for having fun and making memories for yourself and love ones you share the time with. Princess — nor any other cruise line out there — is going to have a business model where they aren’t upselling and trying to maximize revenue.

Cruising can often be pretty cheap if you want it to be but you have to work at making it cheap. It can be very easy to let the dollars mount as you upgrade cabins, buy packages, add excursions etc. Just say “no” to expensive alcohol packages, onboard sales, spa treatments, and bingo. Refreshed during a dry dock in 2018, the ship was embellished with new offerings, such as super comfortable Princess Luxury Beds in every room, rebranded poolside dining options and an upgraded kids' center.

We don't get any packages, and we always have a wonderful carefree pretty much AI experience for the entire family. Many, many people go in cruises every year and don’t buy anything more than the basic travel and they have a wonderful time. They aren’t worried about what other people on the ship get that they don’t get.

More about Princess Cruises

The "Just get the Plus package" advice pushes the costs to £7k, not a small figure for any family and especially during a cost of living crisis, and that's before shore excursions or anything else. I just can't wrap my head about how much do you actually need to spend before it actually feels like a care free all-inclusive experience, which it certainly doesn't feel like it at the moment, it's like there's a toll booth at every turn. What types of activities are available vary from ship to ship, but generally speaking, cruisers typically gather around the pools by day and hang out day and night in the Piazza to enjoy spontaneous performances, live music and dancing. The line's signature Movies Under the Stars is also popular.

Built in 2004, Caribbean Princess underwent extensive renovations in 2019. The refurbishment brought a wide array of upgrades to cabins and the kids’ splash area, as well as a variety of new restaurants. In addition, the ship has had much drydock work done over the years (the most recent one being in early 2022), which has kept it in good shape and feeling up to date. It's not just all silly fun -- some of the ship's best attractions are more cultured. Trivia is standing-room-only and full of die-hard players, art lectures and auctions are well attended and the best stage show is full of operatic arias.

The modern and high-tech OceanMedallion, a personalization technology, is meant to make your cruise more convenient and service more intuitive. OceanMedallion, a small disk replacing the keycard, is used to open cabin doors automatically, embark and disembark, register food and drink preferences and many more, particularly when paired with several apps. For a full comparison between the two cruise lines, read Princess Cruises vs. Royal Caribbean International. Although Royal Princess debuted in 2013, it went into dry dock for an extensive renovation in December 2018.

On select ships theatrical productions by the creator of "Wicked," Steven Schwartz, draw a crowd in the evening. Princess offers a casual yet refined traditional cruise experience with an emphasis on dining, Broadway-style entertainment and live music. Princess is renowned for its expertise in Alaska cruising, though Princess sails all over the world with ships ranging from 672 passengers to 3,560. I have a feeling that you’re convinced that you won’t enjoy yourself.

Royal Princess shines in its partnerships and programming, even if these lack major signage and branding within the daily Princess Patter. Chocolatier Norman Love's Chocolate Journey desserts stand out from the menu. The North to Alaska enrichment lectures, such as a talk by Libby Riddles, the first female Iditarod winner, were excellent.

It definitely is a bottomless money pit - as long as you keep throwing money into it. The math for plus or premium just doesn't work for us. We also don't spend much on board either, in fact I refer to us as a couple of freeloaders. We don't do many excursions, and we don't do specialty dining much either.

Cruising is not for everyone and if you decide not to cruise then that is a perfectly good decision for you. For some people they only need the bare basics of accommodation, food, water and entertainment to make a cruise a wonderful holiday especially if the stops are places they want to visit. You normally don't need to spend a small fortune on excursions... However, others want the extras of drinks packages, wifi, and many love the ship excursions or health spa services, private cabanas, speciality dining. But you really don't need all that stuff to have a good time.

What is the Best Time To Cruise to Alaska?

best time to do an alaskan cruise

In the earliest and latest days of the cruise season, distant mountain peaks are capped with snow. Early cruises offer the chance to see meadows blanketed with blooming wildflowers in a gorgeous display of color, whereas September visits coincide with the appearance of brilliant fall foliage. Early June is the peak time to witness the breathtaking spectacle of calving glaciers.

The Best Time for Whale Watching

We understand that time is the greatest luxury, which is why Condé Nast Traveler mines its network of experts and influencers so that you never waste a meal, a drink, or a hotel stay wherever you are in the world. While the weather in Alaska in June brings out the flowers and even greener scenery, expect mosquitoes to be biting. Alaska temperatures can be unpredictable, so come prepared with the proper wardrobe. Temperatures are relatively mild, with daytime highs in the upper 40s and into the 50s depending on where you're visiting and cloud cover. However, it’s not necessarily a good idea to pick a cruise based solely on price.

Tourist Attraction Availability

Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. Alaska cruises offer a wide range of activities in port, with options for active travelers, wildlife lovers, history buffs and shoppers. Whether you're traveling with young kids or require more sedentary recreation, the Alaska cruise ports won't disappoint. These cruise lines, especially on their newer ships, offer something for everyone — as well as a higher caliber of onboard dining than on the cheapest cruises. Some activities are included in the cost of the cruisetour; other outings can be booked like shore excursions, depending on your interest and budget.

What to Expect on an Alaskan Cruise in April

With the warmer weather, it is not unusual to see an increase in the number of people looking to enjoy Alaska’s untamed wilderness. This is when bears have emerged from hibernation and tend to be fairly active. If you hope to spot a grizzly, you might just have your opportunity if you cruise Alaska during this period, along with viewing moose and even a chance to see more calves or cubs running around. National park facilities and some tourist businesses will switch to winter hours. September is also a great time to get deals on souvenirs, as merchants sell off this year's goods at the end of Alaska's tourist season. July and August are also spawning season for salmon, so you might spot grizzlies and brown bears near rivers and streams.

The captain of the ship nimbly repositioned us, giving both the port and starboard sides prime viewing, at a safe and respectful distance from the animals. With binoculars, cameras, and phones at the ready, the passengers and crew aboard UnCruise Adventures' 86-guest S.S. Legacy settled in for what turned out to be an hour-long private show by a juvenile humpback who had migrated from Hawaii to spend the summer in the nutrient-rich Alaskan waters. The Alaska cruise season is a little over six months long, but choosing the best time to cruise Alaska is surprisingly not that simple. If spotting wildlife is a priority for you on an Alaska cruise, pick your sailing date carefully.

In addition to airfare, you’ll also want to figure out transportation logistics on land, which can vary from one embarkation city to another. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of the best free and low-cost activities to do in each Alaska cruise port, which should help give you some ideas. Walk to Skagway’s historic downtown from the cruise dock and tour the town’s infamous saloons, including the Red Onion. Then, tip back a genuine Southeast Alaska specialty, a spruce tip ale at the Skagway Brewing Company; this unusual ale uses spruce tips instead of hops in its brew.

What’s the Best Time to See Whales on an Alaska Cruise?

You're also quite likely to see many bald eagles that are also interested in salmon. Few places allow for viewing of the aurora borealis, and the best time see the Northern Lights is in September. In fact, the end of May and early June offers some of the best weather in the region throughout the year. While it is impossible to see and do it all over the course of a one week cruise, Alaska has the power to enchant even brief visitors. So while you are stuck at home, this may be the perfect time to start planning a cruise to The Last Frontier.

Browse a local outdoor consignment shop or search for used clothing on websites like Facebook Marketplace or eBay to find the best deals. If you’re unsure what to pack for an Alaska cruise, check out our comprehensive packing list. Because of this, take a look at the main attractions in your embarkation city. You might enjoy shopping at Pike’s Place Market and visiting the Space Needle in Seattle, or enjoying a relaxing stroll through Stanley Park in Vancouver. When scheduling your return flights, don’t book a flight too early on disembarkation day.

This period marks the end of the cruising season, offering a unique opportunity to witness these ethereal swirls of light dancing across the sky. The best time to spot bears in Alaska, particularly grizzly bears, is during the summer months, with June and July being the peak. The best time to cruise Alaska really depends on what you’re hoping to see and do! If you’re eager to spot whales, aim for mid-June through mid-August, when these majestic creatures are most active. The Alaskan cruise season runs from May to September, encompassing a period of rapid change in wildlife, weather, pricing, and crowds.

We’ll also discuss factors you may not have considered, such as visibility of the Northern Lights, financial costs, and more. And especially as Alaska is so different compared to your typical warmer cruise destination. On clear nights, you could have a chance to spot the northern lights — though they won't shine as brightly as they do in winter.

Price-conscious travelers will generally find price breaks before Memorial Day or after mid-August, when schools in many parts of the country will be in session. The Official Visitors Guide for Juneau playfully uses a raindrop graphic for every month in the calendar (in Southeast Alaska it’s never a question of whether it will rain, but how much it will rain). Wetter weather often sets in during the month of July, getting progressively wetter going into autumn.

You’d be surprised by how many activities you can fit into a pre-cruise stay in Seattle or Vancouver. Even if you arrive at 3PM the day before your cruise, you will have around twenty hours in either city before embarkation begins. Regardless of where your cruise starts and ends, it’s always better to plan transportation logistics ahead of time to avoid any surprises and confusion upon arrival. In Seattle, for instance, you’ll want to research the best way to get from the airport to your hotel, and from your hotel to the cruise port. In most instances, a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft is the most convenient option. However, your hotel may also provide a shuttle, or you could even take the light rail from the airport to downtown.

best time to do an alaskan cruise

Though summer is the most popular time to cruise Alaska, springtime may be ideal for travelers who prefer fewer tourists, slightly cooler temperatures, and more regular daylight hours, with no midnight sun to contend with. Now that it has a couple of seasons in Alaska under its belt, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) is not holding back. In 2024, the company is offering a 19-day sailing that starts in Vancouver, Canada, before working its way past the fjords, glacier-filled straits, and Indigenous villages of the Inside Passage. Unlike most other sailings that stay within the southeast, from here, the ship hangs a hard left and chugs along to Kodiak, an island community known for humongous brown bears and prolific crab fishing. Though it’s the second-largest island in the entire United States, it’s rare that cruise ships visit, mainly because it lacks the infrastructure for big ships.

Royal Caribbean also sails to Alaska in early May and into late September or even October, where you can find some great deals. There is a chance you will see some snow, so a winter coat, gloves, and a hat are a smart addition to your packing list. You also might see fuzzy harbor seal pups and sea lion pups (born in June and July) warming themselves on rocks with their mothers.

Complete Guide to Royal Caribbean Fleet & Ship Classes

royal caribbean cruise ships by class

With each step down in size, there are fewer restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and attractions. Even the smallest of Royal Caribbean ships still have quite a bit to offer, though. If you’re wondering what the difference is between Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class, the answer is not much. Quantum Ultra-class ships each have Sky Pad virtual reality trampolines on the back and the indoor pool has a retractable roof for sunnier days. There’s the addition of a Playmakers sports bar, a karaoke lounge and a tea room, but these come at the loss of the pub and teen disco.

The first two ships are near-enough identical sisters, however, Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas both added the Ultimate Abyss – the world’s longest slide at sea. The biggest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet currently is Wonder of the Seas. Royal Caribbean is an American cruise line headquartered in Miami, Florida.

Royal Caribbean’s Vision Class cruise ships may be the oldest and smallest in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, but still offer plenty to choose from in terms of itineraries, activities, dining, and entertainment onboard. Royal Caribbean’s Voyager Class cruise ships can be a nice choice for first-time or seasoned cruisers. They come with plenty to do, see, eat, and drink onboard, and offer a diverse range of itineraries around the world. While Freedom-class ships are no longer in the top 10 of Royal Caribbean's biggest ships, they remain a great combination of value and things to do.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships were the biggest in the world until Icon came along, with space for over 6,600 guests. These massive ships are so wide that they have a hollow centre where you’ll find the huge Central Park with thousands of plants, the Boardwalk complete with a carousel and a zip-line over the top of it all. Whether you’re looking to dial up the romance with your special someone or take family bonding to the next level, you’ll find plenty onboard to turn every sea day into an unforgettable thrill-a-thon. And with five record-breaking ships sailing all over the world — from Asia to Alaska to the Caribbean — you’re never out of options for an incredible vacation. When it comes to gamechanging adventures at sea, there’s nothing quite like Quantum and Quantum Ultra Class.

Radiance Class ships are a series of four vessels that were built between 2001 and 2004. The ships in this class are Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Jewel of the Seas. They are smaller than the Oasis-class ships, but still offer a variety of features and activities. The Oasis-class ships are designed for passengers who love big, bustling resorts with every sort of amusement known to humans. They are perfect for families, groups, and anyone who wants to experience a cruise on a massive, state-of-the-art ship.

Another reason to skip the Freedom Class would be if you prefer smaller size cruise ships. The Radiance Class or Vision Class ships would be a better choice in that situation. Freedom Class ships are known for all the fun activities on the pool deck, including cantilevered hot tubs, a FlowRider surf simulator, water slides, and a vibrant pool deck. Consistently awarded Best Ship year after year by Travel Weekly Readers, the biggest, boldest ships at sea also boast some of the best cruise activities — including Royal Suite Class.

There are small splash areas on the Quantum Class ships and the larger Splashaway Bay on the two Quantum Ultra ships, though there are no waterpark-ready waterslides. Looking for the extras offered on Oasis-class ships in a smaller package? Royal Caribbean's Quantum-class ships feature a massive array of activities, entertainment and technology but hold just over 4,000 passengers. Royal Caribbean ship classes offer a mind-boggling array of choices for almost every cruise style. The line is known worldwide for its wow-factor mega-ships -- including Wonder of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship.
